Beer Culture in Hanoi, Vietnam
What do working people in Japan drink at night to signal the end of the day? Beer!
In Japan, there is a culture of drinking alcohol at night, and it is the same in Vietnam.
Vietnam ranks 7th in the world in beer consumption! Even Japan, with a population of about 25 million more than Vietnam, ranks 10th, so you can understand the enormity of the country’s beer consumption. (as of 2022)*1*2
In this issue, we will introduce the beer culture of Hanoi, Vietnam.
Well, that’s a delicious Vietnamese beer!
One of the factors that make Vietnam a beer powerhouse is its climate.
Vietnam’s proximity to the equator and the ocean basically exposes the country to scorching heat all year round.
Imagine drinking a nice cold beer in such a situation.
In the Old Quarter of the capital city of Hanoi, there is a street called “Tha Hien Street,” which is also known as “Beer Street.
A busy city at night, low chairs on a narrow street, beer poured into glasses filled with ice…no matter if it rains! The atmosphere is breathtaking.

Which one do you drink? Vietnam’s Beer Industry
In addition, a wide variety of beers are produced and sold in Vietnam.
We carry three types of beer: 333 Beer (Barber Beer), Saigon Beer, and Kirin Beer.
But this is not the only way to describe Hanoi’s beer!
- Bia Hoi Hanoi” for short time, mass production, and freshness
- Hanoi Beer”, a refreshing beer with a long history
- World famous, but the Vietnamese version is manufactured in Vietnam, “Tiger Beer” with the tiger symbol.
…etc.
Among them, “Bia Hoi Hanoi” is famous as a very cheap beer.
In February 2024, when the person in the middle was backpacking, it was exactly the Vietnamese Lunar New Year “tiet,” and each bottle cost 10,000 dong, or about 60 Japanese yen.
It is especially popular among tourists because of the cheap draft beer available. This is probably why they mass produce in a short period of time and place such importance on freshness.

Enjoyable even if you’re a loser! Drinker’s stall!
I am actually a very poor beer drinker…but I can still enjoy the Vietnamese beer culture!
Because the food is delicious!
Many snacks exist in Vietnam.
The standard ones are,
- Shrimp surimi deep-fried lemon grass….Lemon grass stalks with surimi attached and deep fried.
- Chicken with lime leaves…chicken marinated in lemongrass and a spicy sauce and baked
- Fresh Spring Rolls
- Deep-fried Spring Rolls
- Baked intestine with cartilage
- Deep-fried fermented sausage
- Fried Chinese cabbage*3
- Vietnamese Fried Rice
…etc.
All are excellent products themselves!
I’m getting hungry writing this…

Let’s have a good beer!
How was it?
You can see that the beer culture in Vietnam is made up of three things: climate, industry, and delicious snacks.
In addition to draft beer, Viet shop also offers a special “small drink set”, so please try Vietnamese beer culture!
Have a good evening drinking time.
